We have tried, in this article, to study the initial confrontation of the Iranian economy with the newly emerged capitalist market relations during the 19th century and analyze its consequences at the different levels (economic, political, and social). In the first step, we have provided a descriptive account of the transformations of the Iranian economy during this period, and consequently, provide the preliminaries for analyzing this process. We found that this process of reorientation of the Iranian economy through the capitalist relations resulted in various transformations which had important effects on the consequent course of the Iranian history during the 20th century: the emergence of a new Big Merchants who invested substantially in real states, the emergence of the proto-forms of the personal property through selling the state lands, the collapse of the fragile equilibrium of the subsistence economy through ecological catastrophes like the Great Famine of the 19th century. Neither of these changes, despite all, resulted in a complete rupture from the pre-capitalist social relations of production and pre-capitalist strategies of surplus extraction.
