Navedi Nishapuri is a lesser-known poet of Akbar’s period (r. 1556-1605 C.E.), his reminiscences are briefly recorded. Tazkiras containing his biography indicate that he had compiled a Diwan and authored two Mathnavis named as Varidat-I Ghaibiya and Makhzanul La’ali but unfortunately, their copies have not survived. Navedi’s title name includes his birthplace where he might have been born and brought up. When he stepped into the field of poetry, went to the court of Chugtayi Sultans and eulogized Sultan Bahadur and Sultan Khudabardi, ruler of Nasaf. In the last phase of his life, he traveled to India and joined the court of Emperor Humayun (d. 1556 C.E.).
This is noteworthy that his contemporary five poets used “Navedi” as their own nome-de-plume i.e. Mulla Navedi, Navedi Turbati, Navedi Razi, Navedi Kulang, and Navedi Shirazi. Due to this similarity, Tazkira-navis and chroniclers could not differentiate between their biographies and have merged Navedi Nishapuri’s couplets with others. In this paper, the biography and dispersed couplets of Navedi Nishapuri have been accumulated from Tazkiras and chronicles. The life history of the other five Navedis along with their couplets acquired through Tazkiras and chronlicles, have been separated in the endnote.
