Aim: In today's world, education is considered one of the
most important necessities of life, as education without
continuing education is endangered, since education requires a
great deal of cost and budget and students' education requires
their academic success. The purpose of this study was to
investigate the relationship between students' academic
performance and their cognitive ability. Method: This crosssectional
study was performed on high school students in
district 3 of Mashhad in 1997-96 and 395 students were
selected by convenience sampling. The instrument used in this
study was a 30-item Cognitive Ability Questionnaire on seven
subscales of "active memory", "inhibitory control and
selective attention", "decision making", "planning", "sustained
attention and cognitive flexibility". Pearson correlation test
was used to examine the correlation between GPA and
executive functions.Results: Significant correlations between
grade point average and total cognitive abilities and subscales
of active memory, inhibitory control and selective attention,
decision making, planning, sustained attention and cognitive
flexibility (all at p = 0.0001) Except social cognition (p =
0.969). Conclusion: There were positive correlations between
students' scores on cognitive ability, active memory,
inhibitory control and selective attention, decision making,
planning, sustained compliance, and cognitive flexibility.
