The story of Murra bin Qais is the narration of a miracle occurred
by Imam Ali (AS) during which the Imam killed his enemy, who
dared to show impudence, from the inside of the grave. This story
has been widely reflected in the Persian texts and Shia heritage in
the last few centuries and has sometimes been mentioned in poems.
However, authentic and ancient historical sources do not refer to a
man named Murra binn Qais and similar incidents have not been
reported. Analyzing the historical elements in some versions of this
story, this article shows that the story of Murra bin Qais enjoys a
historical origin and can reflect the looting and attacks of the Arab
tribes and clans such as Qaramita and Banu Khafajah on Kufa and
Najaf in the 4th century AH.
