Ali Islamic University- Najaf Abstract This study concentrates on the term “Dirty Realism” and its contrast or paradox in the poetry of the American poet and writer Raymond Carver (1938-1988).
“For his works, Carver turns the attention towards the life on the Pacific Ocean, particularly the North-Eastern part” (Viola Kita, 2014: 1) when farmers, heavy drinkers and common people live a very difficult state of being lost in a never- defined world of chaos and meaninglessness.
In this poem “Happiness” Carver talks of the happiness that can be found in everyday life if it is just searched for: “So early it’s still almost dark out.
The poem narrates the story of two boys who seem delivering newspaper and cherishing their time together and gaining happiness in the view of the sky taking on light.
The sky is taking on light, though the moon still hangs pale over the water…” (Ibid) The moment is remarkably quick; the boys still young but yet up and very early to do their duties that Carver considers heavy.
With this scene of the two boys, Raymond Carver conveys a message to all humans all over the world and to himself that happiness does not related to things that are difficult to be obtained, but it may result from the little and simple things in our lives.
By using imagery and a peaceful voice, Carver creates the idea of being happy with usual and simple things in his poem.
Raymond carver uses imagery throughout his poem to emphasize the moment that makes the two boys happy.
