Water is the most important factor for the life of mankind and the nature, as shown in this verse of holy Qur’an «و جعلنا من الماء کل شیء حی» (الانبیاء ایه 30). As a result, the phenomenon of water bearing, and providing cold water to the travelling caravans on their route and old city districts of the desert cities in Iran and mosques, holy places and even bath houses have a special place in the Islamic culture of Iran. The donation of water, cisterns of drinking water, ponds, glaciers and fonts that provided the drinking water to the mosques and holy shrines have their roots in this religious culture and faith and have an eternal bond with the Shi’ite beliefs. Subjects such as Imam Ali being the water bearer, or water of Kawthar, water of Salsabil, water of Zamzam, and especially the tragic event of the Ahl-Al-Bayt’s thirst in the hot and dry deserts of Karbala are the concept which have been especially used for the poems inscribed on the cisterns and fonts. The font is one of the important transportable elements in the Iranian architecture especially in mosques, holy shrines and sometimes bath houses which is manifested in various forms. While fonts are many, there is not much variety in their shape, which are round and rectangular. In the examined specimens, the round fonts normally consist of a large chalice, a shali and a short stump. Many of these can be seen in Isfahan mosques, holy shrines and schools. The rectangular fonts can be seen in the Takht-e Foolad cemetery takiyahs and have been pointed out in the book titled “Takht-e Foolad, A Historic Isfahan Memorial”. This article presents different and special types of fonts. The Atigh Jame’ Mosque has an exceptional form compared to all other fonts. Despite the beauty and uniqueness of this font, this font has not been examined by the researchers because of the high level of damage and erosion of its inscription. The font that was moved from the Atigh Jame’ Mosque of Shiraz to the pars museum in 1935, went through a difficult time for 80 years which resulted in an increase in erosion and damage to one of the most beautiful fonts in Iran and data that could help in identifying the date it was built was lost because of this severe damage and the history of this effect was lost in ambiguity. So much so that the researchers from Shiraz like Behrouzi, Sami and Khoubnazar have described the Farsi inscriptions as unreadable. Despite the high erosion of the font inscriptions, there are some couplets and words that can still be read, each of which giving some indirect indication of its history and patron. Although unclear, these words and phrases have answered many questions and help in finding the age and the name of the patron of this work. Haj Mirza Ibrahim Khan-e Sharifi was the person who commissioned the font during the reign of Fath-Ali Shah, he was the official representative of the Fars province from 1801 to 1811 and the font was built during this time. Once he was removed form his post he did not partake in administration work but he repaired the Atigh mosque which was damaged during the earthquake of 1823.
