Abstract:
Semi-open spaces have played the role of a buffer and intermediate space for closed and open spaces from the past until now. The purpose of this study is to investigate the trend of changes in semi-open space (porch and terrace) and its effect on improving the functional efficiency of housing. In this regard, in order to study the role of porches and terraces in houses, 25 cases of traditional houses belonging to the three Safavi, Qajar and Pahlavi periods in Isfahan and 30 cases of houses belonging to the last thirty years in this city based on the diversity of semi-open space in terms of Access, area, connectivity, depth, shape, and finally the placement of several samples of semi-open spaces in a structure were selected. Finally 11 traditional cases and 15 modern cases were analysed using the space syntax method, in which using Quantitative strategy, the subject was examined. The results show that semi-open spaces in traditional houses have mostly belonged to private and semi-private areas of the house, while these spaces have more public and semi-public roles in modern cases. Therefore, the decrease in private semi-open spaces and the downward trend of all space syntax criteria (integration, connectivity, choice, depth, isovist area and entropy) simultaneously for semi-open spaces during periods, clearly shows the decrease in the quality of semi-open spaces from Safavi to modern period And even the increase of the control criteria in the modern period has somehow reduced the quality of private terraces. Based on this, it can be concluded that the quality of semi-open spaces, by going through a downward trend over time, has somehow reduced its effective role in improving the functional efficiency of housing and ultimately in the modern period has led to a decrease in the functional efficiency of housing.
